Phil Ivey’s Monday night at FullTilt online was bad to say the least, with the infamous pro player losing copious amounts in a few monster pots. Ivey lost most of his money in two gigantic pots during a game of Omaha against online the online legend that is the Finnish Ilari “Ziigmund” Sahamies, the pair were playing heads up in a $500/$1000 blinds cash game. The table that the players were playing at was actually Ivey’s own table that he created under the name of “Ivey Thunderdome,” but it seems that playing on home turf served as no advantage to Ivey.
The first huge pot that Ivey lost was a result of his opponent hitting a flush on the river, leading to Ivey losing an astonishing 213k in one pot. But this was not the end of Ivey’s bad streak, as only 2 minutes later he would be involved in the biggest pot seen on FullTilt Poker this December.
The pot began with Sahamies raising up to $3,000 off the button, with Ivey calling his raise. Ivey checked the flop of 9h-9d-2h. Sahamies bet $6,000 and Ivey raised his bet to $21,000 with Sahamies calling this bet. The two of clubs came on the turn, and Ivey proceeded to bet a substantial $45,000. This bet caused Sahamies to move all-in for $168,980, leaving Ivey with a large decision but he made the call.
There was $321,983 in the pot when the players showed their cards for the showdown, and Ivey would have been quite reasonable to believe that his trip nines with an ace kicker (9c-5d-Ad-Kh) were good enough to take down the pot. Despite Ivey’s strong hand, he was basically drawing dead against Ziigmund’s four-of-a-kind two’s (2s-2d-As-5c).
Ivey only had a single out, this being the final 9 in the deck but it was not to be and the river came as a 4h. The High Stakes Poker Database is a Web site that is dedicated to monitoring high-stakes poker games online and has listed this particular pot as the sixth-biggest of all time. With such amazing high stake action as this coming from entertaining players like Ivey, with a bit of luck there will be plenty more in the near future to continue our excitement in the game. It is games like these that entice new players into the game and give the game an even more highlighted image in the outside world, surely this level of entertainment cant be bad in anybody’s books!
