Who would have thought there would ever be a university named after a poker pro…well there will be, sort of. Johnny Chan and his company is rumoured to have made an arrangement with the Casino Career Training Center in Buffalo, NY to brand an online training course for dealers surprisingly dubbed “Johnny Chan University”. The main idea behind the course according to Chan is to capitalize on the future demand especially in the Asian markets.
“This Internet thing is going to explode,” he told the paper. “I want to train all of Asia - the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan… ”
The course is said to be set up as a 100 hour online class consisting of instructional videos as well as live training with instructors through webcams. Grades will be based on video exams which will also benefit students by in turn having a video resume of their ability.
Editor Opinion: Well this seems like it could be a cool concept, I hardly see how it is more benefical than getting hands on training at real tables. I think you can learn alot more from in person training than online but I guess it depends on various learning styles. As well, they will need to make sure that the course complies with the casino requirements for dealer certification and is in line with the standard hiring policies. If they can do that, they will be off to an ok start, but of course, Chan will make alot of money cause of the name and brand.
