The British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has confirmed that from the 1st of September, any gambling companies that do not meet the strict requirements of the British Government will not be allowed to advertise within the UK. Any organisations breaking this law can expect hefty fines and even a jail sentence.

Just one week after Barney Frank introduced a bill to regulate online gambling in the US, Rep. Shelly Berkley has followed up on Frank’s iniative introducing bill H.R. 2140 to the House of Representatives this past Thursday. The new bill proposes that a study be done by the National Academy of Sciences to analyze what the proper response is in how the US should adress the online gambling issue. Not surprisingly, Barney Frank is one of the bills co-sponors of the bill along with 59 other congressman. Barney Frank, Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee is facing some tough opposition on his proposed bill which would regulate online gambling in the United States. The heat comes unsurprisingly from the Professional Sports Lobby (specifically NFL lobbyist Martin Gold) and essentially aims at invalidating Frank’s bill citing an unsustainability that would result from making sports wagering online equal to that of its offline counterpart. Barney Frank, Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee announced this morning that he plans to introduce a bill this week targetted at repealing the current ban on online gambling in the United States, also know as the UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act).
