To all parents out there, a new and inventive replacement for the traditional dreidel may have just been created just in case your kids are getting a bit bored of the good old plain dreidel. And is very unlikely that a child’s attention span will fix upon a dreidel for longer than a few minutes before getting bored, the solution to this may be to give your kids the illusion that they are in fact simply playing poker.
This appears to be the concept lying behind a brand new game on the market going by the name of No Limit Texas Dreidel, which can be found at www.moderntribe.com. This idea may prove to be successful among children as many parents are sure to agree that the game of poker holds a greater level of fascination than simply playing with a dreidel. The game of poker has always been automatically linked with the traditional clichés of such things as cigar smoking around a table, large sums of cash flying around and the drinking of whiskey, but now even children can enjoy the general principles behind poker whilst learning.
The dreidel is usually played with chocolate and other confectionary items as prizes, but the fun involved in playing the dreidel can never compare to poker, a combination of the two will be likely to attract children from all backgrounds to play the game. Despite many people naturally making the assumption that the idea is simply a sly attempt to take advantage of the new generation of children, No Limit Texas Dreidel bears reasonable resemblance to poker, just without the large monetary betting! The stakes are of course kept low and playful for the children, with betting being performed with chocolate rather than money. An additional benefit of the game is that kids are encouraged to work out the extremely simple odds that have been introduced into the new game, helping promote children to enjoy maths etc.
The game is played by each individual player spinning their own personal dreidel – referred to as the “whole” dreidel, similar to your whole cards in poker that are dealt to you. This whole personal dreidel is then covered by a little plastic shaker, and the table proceeds to perform a round of betting. Chocolate goes into the pot in the centre of the table. Then there are two community spins of the dreidel, followed by a further two rounds of betting. “Gimel” is the highest-ranked letter you can get, “Hey” is the second highest, “Nun” is the third ranked and “Shin” the worst. You have to match up the three highest dreidels, as can be seen in poker when you match up three cards to get ‘three-of-a-kind’. As the game is set as No-Limit, players can of course bet as little or much as they want and win more goodies!
