The game of Texas Holdem is currently the most popular version of Poker in the world. It has even been given the title of ‘The Cadillac of Poker’ by Poker great Doyle Brunson. But the question is, why has Holdem become such a popular game instead of the other Poker variants like Omaha and Stud? This article aims to explain the game’s huge popularity in this modern era.
If we compare the structures of the big 3 games, Holdem, Omaha and Stud, it is evident that Holdem is the easiest game to learn. The rules are fairly simple in comparison to the other 3, with Omaha just being a slightly more complex version of the Holdem game. Stud can be a little complicated at first due to each player receiving so many cards, and so it is not as easy to play at home games, especially if you are just starting to learn. Therefore from a beginner’s perspective, Holdem appears to be the most attractive game.
As you progress and continue to play the games on a higher level, you will find that Holdem can incorporate a variety of plays and allow for elaborate bluffs in a multitude of situations. In Omaha it is a little difficult to pull off bluffs with there being so many cards on the table, and it is likely that someone already has the nuts or is drawing to it at some point during the hand. Seven Card Stud however does also allow for advanced plays to be made, and requires a good psychological game of being able to understand your opponents well. But when it comes to having a flexible structure to make a variety of plays on, Holdem shines through once again.
One of the biggest factors behind the popularity of Holdem is Media coverage. If you turn on any Poker show on TV, there probably a 90% chance or better that it will be about Holdem. Furthermore, some of the most recent films like Casino Royale have included the game of Texas Holdem in the script, which has helped to glamorise the game greatly. There have also been films based on poker such as Rounders, where Holdem has been glamorised even further by the way the film has been orientated around the game.
All of these points combined help to attract any new poker player to Holdem, once again increasing the total number of players in this particular game. You should never have too much trouble in finding an alternative game like Omaha or Stud, but Holdem is currently where all the players (and money) are. After all, the greatest poker tournament in the World is the WSOP Main Event, which is a Texas Holdem game.
