Apparentely the Chinese Government has not restricted the rights of its citizens enough, so it has decided to take its virtual cops program nationwide coming to a website near you this June. The program, which was “succesfully” deployed in the region of Shenzhen aims at cracking down on gambling and pornography on all the major portals across the net. The test program that ran earlier last year, featured a floating policeman on all the major Chinese portals to remind users of the new monitoring procedures. Apparentely, it was also linked into local police stations with an alarm for any unauthorized content that was posted.
According to Vice-Minister Zhang Xinfeng of the Chinese news agency Xinhua, “The existence of these problems has affected the healthy development of the Internet, brought harm to the youths’ minds, contaminated the social ethos and disrupted the social order.”
Due to the success of the programs deployment last year Chinese officials have tenatively aimed to poise the program for a nationwide launch sometime in June. This is another major censorship setback for Chinese citizens and it is important that people make their opinions heard in having the right to decide what internet portals they do and do not visit.
