The traditionally poker room set up of various offshore companies rarely identified by name is no more, Yahoo Poker is here. Yahoo announced Thursday that they will be offering online poker for real money to UK players in an attempt to broaden their horizons in internet ventures.
The poker room, found on the Yahoo.co.uk homepage, is a collaboration between Yahoo and Gibraltar based St. Minver Ltd., a player in the gaming industry. The poker room is a essentially a skin of the Swedish Boss Network and shares their international player database for its room which will ensure that there is volume as the Yahoo skin starts to grow.
This is a very interesting step for a major online player like Yahoo to take especially in the wake of US legislation banning financial gambling transactions in the US last year. If more of the top dogs on the internet decide to test these waters there will definetely be alot more pressure on the US Government to revisit their policies in regards to this industry.
Editor’s Note: A neat thing that I think may have been a motivation for Yahoo doing this is that during my research online I have seen that thousands of people search Yahoo for the term “Yahoo Poker” each month. Maybe they just realized that they could capitalize on what there customers were already looking for, either way it’s an interesting move.
Here is the homepage of the Yahoo Poker page:
