Carlos Mortensen 2007 WPTCarlos Mortensen managed to beat out his final table opponents and win the 2007 WPT Championship at approximately 3:00 a.m. EST on Saturday morning. The win makes Mortensen the first player to win $5 Million + in tournaments at the Bellagio and his track record is extremely impressive with two WPT wins and a WSOP bracelet. Even more impressive is how Carlos battled at one point from 1,000,000 in chips and a short stack, to the leader and eventual winner of the tournament.

The match ended on hand #182 heads-up between Mortensen and Kirk Morrison, here is the PokerNews.com description of how the final hand went down:

Hand #182 - Carlos Mortensen has the button, he raises to about 5 million, Morrison moves all in, and Mortensen calls with {K-Hearts}{J-Hearts}. Morrison shows {A-Spades}{4-Diamonds}, and Mortensen will have to improve to win the tournament on this hand.

The flop comes {7-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{3-Clubs}, and Mortensen needs a king, a jack, or something runner-runner.

The turn card is — the {J-Clubs}! Mortensen makes a pair of jacks to take the lead, and he is one card away from history. Morrison needs an ace or a four to stay alive.

The river card is — the {3-Diamonds}. It’s over! Mortensen wins the hand — and the tournament — with a pair of jacks. Kirk Morrison finishes in second place, earning $2,011,135.

Mortensen’s win earned him $3,970,415, a healthy payout for five days work and even runner-up and third became millionaires. The final table results and payouts were as follows:

1. Carlos Mortensen - $3,970,415
2. Kirk Morrison - $2,011,135
3. Paul Lee - $1,082,920
4. Guy Laliberte - $696,220
5. Tim Phan - $464,110
6. Mike Wattel - $309,405
