Yesterday, Anna Wroblewski became the first woman ever to win a preliminary event at the Bellagio Five Star World Poker Open winning the $3,000 Buy-in No-Limit event. The tournament featured a field of 324 players and a respectable prize pool of $943,000, Anna’s share representing approx. $337,395. This is a great accomplishment for Anna and women poker players across the nation. Anna, who had just started a $10/hour job to help pay the bills after going on a horrible streak at the tables, seemed determined and relived as she entered the final table of play.
Making the final table was no easy challenge but Anna handled it well eliminating the likes of Eric Lindgren (8th place) as well as online pro Peter Feldman (4th). Heads up play began with Anna as a 3-1 dog however her determination allowed her to slowly overtake the chiplead and evenutally win the tournament. In her own words, “I’m just so happy, I can’t stop smiling.”

The story of how Anna got to this event and started playing poker in general is a interesting one. She originally moved to Vegas at the age of 19 playing in backroom card houses and staying out of the major casinos while building her bankroll. After a streak of horrid luck, she returned to Chicago to wait out her 21st birthday when she would make her return to Sin City.
To qualify for this event, Anna parlayed her original $300 into a free Buy-in through a satellite which allowed her to get into this tournament for free, a good choice yield her a win worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. What Anna failed to mention was that the $300 satellite she bought into to qualify for this event was her entire weeks paycheck….pressure much.
